About Nashik

Nashik is one of the most important cities of Northern Maharashtra. Nashik, in Maharashtra, is situated at a distance of 200 km from Mumbai as well as Pune. Nashik is an ancient holy city in Maharashtra, a state in western India. It’s known for its links to the “Ramayana” epic poem. On the Godavari River is Panchavati, a temple complex. Nearby, Lord Rama was thought to have bathed at Ram Kund water tank. Shri Kalaram Sansthan Mandir is an ancient shrine to Rama, while Rama and Sita are said to have worshipped at Sita Gufaa caves. Other than Godavari, important rivers like Vaitarana, Bhima, Girana, Kashyapi and Darana flow across Nashik.

Attractions in Nashik

Panchavati Panchavati is known to be that site where Lord Rama, Sita and his brother Laxman had stayed during their exile. This sacred spot gets its name from the 5 banyan trees, which are planted nearby on the banks of the river. The devotees take a dip in the waters of this holy river. Panchvati is a part of the Dandakaranya Forest.

Pandav Leni Caves

Group of Hinayana Buddhist rock cut caves, Pandav Leni caved dating back to the 1st century. Placed on Trivashmi hills, these caves has had brilliantly carved sculptures and doorways. It is known for being used as the residence of the monks. A total of 24 caves, these caves have idols of Bodhisattava, Jain Teerthankara, Veer Manivhadraji etc.

Dudhsagar Falls

The panoramic site of Dudhsagar Waterfalls in Someshwar is known as one of the best spots all around the world. Bestowed with picture-postcard scenery, these waterfalls are equally popular amidst locals as well as tourists as a picnic spot. During the monsoon season, these fully roaring waterfalls are flocked by people.

Kapileswara Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kapileswara temple is one of the oldest temples in Nashik. An architectural beauty, this temple has the river Godavari in its backdrop. Like the other Lord Shiva temple, this temple does not have an idol of Nandi bull. This temple is a must-visit. During Shivratri and Shravan Somvar, the temple is visited by thousands of devotees.

Naroshankara Temple

Famed as the Ganga of Southern India, Naroshankara temple is an 18th century temple, dedicated to Lord Shankara. Erected in 1747 by Naroshankar Rajebahaddur, this temple has been constructed in amazing Mayan-style architecture, popular during the 18th century. The temple consists of intricate sculpture designs, an assembly of animals, statues of Padmasana saints, detailed laceworks and ornamental designing.

Jain Mandir

Huge Jain temple complex in Viljouili is a newly erected complex, which is dedicated to Jain saints. Known as Shree Dharmachakra Prabhav Tirth, this three-storied shrine is an architectural marvel, which is made with white marble and pink sand. The ground floor of this building has a huge Pravachan hall where meditation sessions as well as sermons take place.

Kalaram Temple

Constructed in 1782 by Sardar Odhekar of Peshwa, Kalaram temple is dedicated to Lord Rama, his better half Site and his brother Laxman. This 70-feet high temple is built in black stone. The copper dome of the temple is gold plated and the other sculptures are extremely brilliant.

Ramkund

Ramkund is a holy place for Hindus. Devotees believe that a dip in this tank will fulfil their wishes. According to the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama used to bathe in this tank during his stay in Nashik.

Trimbakeshwar

The holy bath tank known as Kushavarta is 5 minutes from the main temple. This Kushvarta holds greater importance during the Kumbhmela shahi snan. At Kushavarta river Ganga takes route to the rest of the India. The origin of the Godavari River is at top of Bramhagiri Hill.

Kumbh Mela

Nashik hosts one of the largest religious gatherings in the world known as Maha Kumbh. The Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Allahabad and the Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place every twelve years at four places in Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. According to the Puranas, it is believed that Kumbh derives its name from an immortal pot of nectar, which the devtas (Gods) and demons fought over. The four places where the nectar fell are at the banks of river Godavari in Nashik, river Kshipra in Ujjain, Riverer Ganges in Haridwar and at the sangam of Ganges, Yamuna and Sarswati in Allahabad.

Industry

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited aircraft manufacturing plant located 16 km from Nashik. The Currency Note Press and India Security Press are on Nashik Road, where Indian currency and government stamp papers are printed respectively. Nashik also has textile industry, e.g., carpet weaving in remote areas like Surgana Block, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has selected Yeola Block for development of Paithani Cluster. To facilitate the export a container freight station was started at MIDC Ambad by the Central Government.

Wine industry

Nashik has been described as "The Wine Capital of India" due to the numerous wineries located within the district. As of 2013, the Nashik region reportedly produces 10,000 tonnes of grapes per year. There are 22 wineries in Nashik, out of 46 wineries throughout India total. Nashik is home to several wine festivals, such as SulaFest in the harvest season.

Education

Bhonsala Military School is the oldest residential school in Nashik.The city has two state-run universities, the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
